what is the guardian?
the guardian was one of the papers that worked the snowden archive, and its editorial line on surveillance has kept reader privacy on the agenda ever since. in may 2022 it launched an official tor onion service, framing it plainly: reading the news should not require telling your network provider - or your government - what you read.
unusually for a major newsroom, the guardian maintains the standard onion-location header on every page of the clearnet site, so the tor browser itself offers the switch automatically. the onion serves the journalism without the advertising javascript of the clearnet edition.
the address tracked here is exactly the one the guardian advertises today. the badge below tells you whether that door into one of the world's most-read newsrooms is answering.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
