what is deutsche welle?
deutsche welle is germany's international public broadcaster, funded by the federal government and editorially independent, broadcasting in more than 30 languages with a mission aimed squarely at audiences in countries with restricted press freedom - iran, china, turkey and the like. it has operated an official onion service since 2019.
when the tor network retired the old short v2 addresses, dw moved with it: their internet-freedom specialist announced the current v3 address in june 2021, and dw also enables the onion-location header - typing dw.com into the tor browser offers the onion version automatically. for the strictest anonymity the full address is still the better route, since it never touches the clearnet.
the address tracked here is exactly the one published in dw's own announcement. our checker probes it through tor around the clock; the badge tells you whether germany's back door into censored networks is open right now.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
