what is tails?
tails is a live operating system you start from a usb stick: it routes every network connection through tor and, on shutdown, forgets everything - no trace left on the host machine, no history to find. it became the standard kit for journalists crossing borders and activists whose laptops may be seized.
in 2024 the tails project merged into the tor project itself, and its onions are now listed on the tor project's official index: the website and the apt package repository. updating tails entirely over onion services is the intended workflow - the system you trust for anonymity should never have to fetch packages through an exit node.
both addresses tracked here come from onion.torproject.org, the tor project's own canonical list. the badge tells you whether the download door for the anonymity toolkit itself is open.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
