prop224

prop224 is the tor design proposal that specified version 3 onion services - the blueprint behind every modern .onion address.

tor development happens through numbered design proposals, and prop224 ("next-generation hidden services in tor") is the document that laid out the entire v3 onion service architecture. when people say prop224 they mean that redesign, not a piece of software.

the proposal replaced the aging v2 design with modern cryptography: ed25519 keys instead of rsa-1024, a proper key-blinding scheme so a service can publish many per-period addresses without extra private keys, and tighter control over how much metadata the directory system holds about a service.

it shipped progressively through tor releases starting in early 2018, and became mandatory once v2 support was ripped out of the network in 2021. every .onion you visit today follows the prop224 design.

you mostly encounter the term in changelogs, research papers and forum arguments about service reliability - knowing that prop224 equals "the v3 onion service spec" is usually enough to follow along.
