what is cwtch?
cwtch, welsh for "hug", is a messaging system with no middleman at all: there is no server that ever sees who talks to whom, because every conversation is itself a tor onion connection between the two parties. no phone numbers, no identifiers, no metadata to seize - developed by canada's open privacy research society.
while most messengers promise privacy inside a hosted service, cwtch removes the host. that design makes it the tool of record when even the existence of a conversation is dangerous knowledge - at the cost of the peer being online for delivery.
the project site itself runs as an official onion, advertised via the standard onion-location header. the address tracked here is that one; the badge tells you whether the documentation door is open.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
